Weekend trips near Monterrey without a car, by bus
You do not need a car to leave Monterrey for the weekend. From the Central de Autobuses, one metro ride away, a coach can drop you at the Cola de Caballo waterfall in Santiago, the Grutas de García caves, colonial Saltillo, or the desert towns of Real de Catorce and Cuatro Ciénegas. Here is what each costs, how long it takes, and which are day trips.
🚌 How to leave Monterrey without a car
Almost every trip out of the city starts in the same spot: the Central de Autobuses de Monterrey, the intercity coach terminal in the Centro. It sits right on top of metro Estación Central on Línea 1, so you reach it with a single yellow-line ride and no transfer Metrorrey network map; Central de Autobuses, Av. Colón. . From there, an ómnibus (an intercity coach) can take you almost anywhere in the north.
For how the metro, the Me Muevo card and the terminal itself work, our getting around Monterrey without a car guide has the mechanics. This one picks up where the city ends.
One thing the maps do not tell you: inside the smaller towns, the actual sight (a cave mouth, a vineyard, a waterfall) usually sits a few kilometres past the bus stop. Keep a DiDi or Uber ready for that last stretch, and check the return-bus times before you wander off, rural services thin out by late afternoon.
⛰️ Day trips you can do and be back by night
Three escapes are close enough to leave after breakfast and sleep in your own bed. Here is the at-a-glance, then the detail on each.

Practical estimates, checked July 2026. Round-trip fares are second-class ballpark and move with service class and season; on-site prices are set by each park.
Start with Santiago and the Cola de Caballo waterfall, the closest and cheapest of all. From metro Santa Lucía you catch an Álamo route bus into the pueblo for about MXN$15 POSTA / Telediario, Cola de Caballo public-transport route, 2026. , then a short local bus from Plaza del Cercado to the gate. The 25-metre falls sit in a walkable park, open 9:00 to 18:00, parking MXN$30 Milenio, Cola de Caballo prices and hours, 2026. , with hanging bridges, a roller-zip line and horses for rent. Half a day, home for dinner.
Grutas de García is a cave system in the Sierra del Fraile, and the honest truth is the solo route is slow: Línea 1 to San Bernabé, then a Ruta 310 bus toward García and a taxi to the gate metromonterrey.com; ABC Noticias, García public-transport route, Semana Santa 2026. . Most students take the tourist shuttle from the Alameda instead, around MXN$380 with entry included. On site you either walk the vereda trail (MXN$50) or ride the teleférico cable car up (around MXN$190) ABC Noticias; grutasdegarcia.com, 2026 rates. . The cable car is the popular call, it skips the steep climb to the entrance.
Saltillo, the Coahuila capital, is the easy city break. Grupo Senda runs it constantly from the Central, up to 65 departures a day, about 1 h 50 and from roughly MXN$104 to 148 each way Wanderu; Grupo Senda, Monterrey-Saltillo, 2026. . It is cooler than Monterrey, with a handsome cathedral, the excellent Museo del Desierto and a centre you can walk. No last-mile problem here, the terminal is central.
🏜️ Bigger weekends worth an overnight
Push past the two-hour mark and the payoff changes: caves you descend into, a desert winery, a mountain ghost town, spring pools the colour of a swimming pool. These are not day trips, pack a bag.
Four overnight escapes
🕳️ Bustamante and the Grutas del Palmito
Bustamante sits about 107 km northwest of the city nuevoleon.travel; POSTA, Bustamante travel notes, 2026., a town of Tlaxcalteca roots known for its walnut sweets and, above all, the Grutas del Palmito, one of the largest cave systems in the region. Coaches leave from the Central de Autobuses and the Alameda: Futura runs it in about two hours for around MXN$230 each way (around €12) Futura / TF Frontera fares via POSTA, 2026.. At the cave, a MXN$50 ticket covers the park truck up to the mouth and a guided walk El Universal; POSTA, Grutas de Bustamante, 2026.. Doable in one long day with an early start, better as an overnight if you want the town too.
🍷 Parras de la Fuente and Casa Madero
Parras is the wine one, a green oasis in the Coahuila desert about 370 km out, roughly 4 h 30 by coach rome2rio; busbud, Monterrey-Parras de la Fuente, 2026.. Direct buses leave the Central from around MXN$400 each way (around €20). The draw is Casa Madero, the oldest winery in the Americas, founded in 1597, sitting 8 km outside town, so budget a taxi or a local tour to reach the vineyards POSTA; Casa Madero visitor information, 2026.. A clear two-day trip, not a day trip.
⛰️ Real de Catorce, the silver ghost town
High in the San Luis Potosí sierra, Real de Catorce has no direct bus. You ride Monterrey to Matehuala first, about 4 h 30, four departures between 6:50 and 15:30 FlixBus / checkmybus, Monterrey-Matehuala schedules, 2026., then change to a local bus toward Dolores Trompeta for around MXN$121, plus a MXN$20 pick-up ride through the one-lane Túnel Ogarrio, the only road into town realdecatorce.info; Grupo Senda, Matehuala routes, 2026.. That transfer alone makes it an overnight, and the cobblestones, desert light and the Wirikuta pilgrimage country around it earn the effort.
💧 Cuatro Ciénegas and its desert pools
Cuatro Ciénegas, in Coahuila, is the strangest of the lot: turquoise spring-fed pozas and white gypsum dunes dropped in the middle of the desert. It is a 5 to 6 hour coach via Monclova, with several evening departures rome2rio; busbud, Monterrey-Cuatro Ciénegas, 2026., so plan on at least two nights. You can swim year-round in the Río Mezquites at about 24 °C and walk the Dunas de Yeso cuatrocienegas.mx; México Desconocido travel notes.. The rarest landscape near Monterrey, and the biggest commitment.
The pattern across all four: book the coach a few days ahead for the busy Friday-evening and Sunday-night departures, and check whether the town needs a car for its outlying sights before you commit. Real de Catorce and Cuatro Ciénegas in particular reward two nights over a rushed one.
🎒 Which escape fits your weekend
If you have a Saturday and little money, Santiago and Cola de Caballo win, nothing else is this close or this cheap. Want caves without renting a car? Grutas de García, ideally on a shuttle. For a real city with museums and cooler air, take Saltillo.
The overnights each sell a different landscape: Real de Catorce for desert-mountain silence, Parras for wine, Cuatro Ciénegas for those unreal pools. Bustamante sits in the middle, a long day or an easy overnight.
None of these has to blow your budget, and the cheap ones stay cheap if you go by bus rather than by tour; our student budget guide puts the numbers in context. And if you would rather not leave the city at all this weekend, the free things to do in Monterrey guide maps the in-city parks and lookouts, from Fundidora to La Huasteca. The rest of the Monterrey guides cover the on-campus side of student life.
Common questions
💸 What is the cheapest weekend trip from Monterrey by bus?
Santiago and the Cola de Caballo waterfall, by a wide margin. From metro Santa Lucía, an Álamo route bus into the pueblo costs about MXN$15, and the local bus up to the park gate runs about MXN$35 each way POSTA / Telediario, Cola de Caballo public-transport route, 2026.. Counting both legs, the round trip lands near MXN$100 (around €5) before food and park extras.
🚌 Can I reach Real de Catorce directly by bus?
No. There is no direct service. You take a coach to Matehuala first (about 4 h 30), then a local bus toward Dolores Trompeta and a pick-up through the Túnel Ogarrio realdecatorce.info; checkmybus, 2026.. Because of the transfer and the distance, treat Real de Catorce as an overnight, not a day trip.
🚕 Do I need a car for any of these?
Not to get to the towns, the coaches and city buses cover that. But the sights themselves often sit a few kilometres outside the centre: the cave mouth at García, the vineyards at Parras, the pools at Cuatro Ciénegas. For those last kilometres, budget a short taxi or a DiDi, or take a day tour that bundles the transport. Download the ride-hail app before you leave Monterrey.
📅 When is the best time of year to go?
For the desert destinations (Real de Catorce, Parras, Cuatro Ciénegas), October through March is far kinder than the summer furnace. The waterfalls run the other way: Cola de Caballo is fullest in the rainy months of July to September. Whatever you pick in summer, take the earliest bus out and carry water, Monterrey highs sit around 38 to 40 °C in July and August CONAGUA / SMN climate normals, Monterrey..
